Members of our staff and frequent collaborators share their ideas for small businesses and artists to support this holiday season.
With all of this in mind, we wanted to share some ideas for how you can make a difference in the life of an artist or small business owner this year, as opposed to adding it to the Ever-Expanding Big Box Pile. While we’re highlighting a handful of people and businesses we like, this is by no means an exhaustive list. Think of it as a starting point for you to consider your own communities and examine who is benefiting from how (and where) you spend your money. Here are a few suggestions from the friendly folks around Meow Wolf...
Jambo Cafe is Black-owned eatery specializing in African-Caribbean fusion in Santa Fe. Their full and delicious menu is currently available for take out.
“I recommend the jerk chicken with rice and beans — the combination of the jerk spice with the caramelized plantains is out of this world!” -Collins
They offer gift cards, and their store, Jambo Bazaar, offers a selection of great seasonings, sauces, beauty items, Chef Ahmed Obo's cookbook, and more. A great option for both locals and tourists.
Senegalese fashion artist Wassa Coulibaly has been blowing minds since she was part of Zumanity, and her couture pieces include bespoke masks and jackets that would be appropriate for Endor or Dramcorp’s (Omega Mart’s parent company) boardroom.
Renzema is a Las Vegas artist and illustrator. In May 2020, she opened an adorable brick and mortar shop, Local Oasis, in the heart of the Downtown Las Vegas Arts District. Renzema’s mission for the store is to provide a platform for other local and national makers.
Sight & Sound Candy & More is the first African-American-owned candy shop in Historic West Las Vegas. Although they offer sweets from a number of decades, it’s more than just a candy shop. They also host birthday parties and events.
Local artist Michelle Lowden (New Mexico) is the founder and owner of Milo Creations. She is a mother from the Pueblo of Acoma and currently works as a Cultural Liaison at Acoma Behavioral Health Services.
“Her incredible work honors her heritage through art, which includes Acoma-influenced jewelry, scarves, and graphic works. Shop an indigenous, woman-owned business.” -Padilla
A woman-owned shop in downtown Santa Fe, Sub Rosa Mercantile carries a ton of beautiful, curated, woman-owned and woman-made brands, as well as art and lifestyle objects.
“I love the calm environment of the store, and it translates into the items she carries. My favorites are the natural, 10-free nail polishes by Death Valley Nails, the beautiful natural scents and incenses, and the regional, handmade ceramics.” -Howard
Blk Mkt Vintage is a Brooklyn-based vintage/antique concept shop.
“This store really speaks to my interests — being a vintage lover — evident in the ‘60s, ‘70s, and ‘80s styles I fuse into my work. I love that this shop has a brilliant curation of books, magazines, art, etc. that celebrates the culture.” -Langford
